New AirPods Max 2023: release this year
It’s been a while since the AirPods Max appeared on the market. The Apple headphones were released on December 15, 2020. With that, it is actually time for an update or better: a new version.
During WWDC 2023, Apple announced several updates to the AirPods. Unfortunately, it’s mostly just for the AirPods Pro 2. Only the “improvements” for switching between devices are coming to the big headphones.
That means the AirPods Max is missing out on a lot of features. In addition, our comparison between the AirPods Max and two other high-end headphones showed that Apple’s headphones are actually quite behind.
Time for an update
It has been three years since the previous AirPods Max appeared. With the AirPods (the earplugs) it takes around three years and a few months for a new version to be released.
We will therefore not be surprised if Apple announces the release of the new AirPods Max during the keynote in September 2023. If the AirPods Max do not make it to that date, it could happen next year during WWDC 2024 in June. It won’t be much later, because then the AirPods Max will be completely hopelessly outdated.

AirPods Max in brief
The AirPods Max are wireless headphones from Apple that you place over your ears. After the success of the AirPods and AirPods Pro, Apple thought it was time for real headphones. The sound of these full-fledged headphones sounds very good, but Apple has also added some extra functions.
The AirPods Max have a variety of features to boost audio quality even more, including Adaptive EQ. This audio mode continuously analyzes how you wear the headphones and then adjusts the music settings accordingly.
On the side of the AirPods Max is a large button and a Digital Crown. You may know the crown from the Apple Watch. You use this button to operate the over-ear headphones. By turning the Digital Crown you control the volume and you open Siri by holding down the button.
Furthermore, the AirPods Max has all kinds of functions to increase the audio quality even more, including Adaptive EQ. This audio mode continuously analyzes how you wear the headphones and then adjusts the music settings accordingly.
