Apple presents the iPhone 17 on 9 September, which will, among other things, get a new chip that brings all kinds of improvements to the device.
New chip iPhone 17
It has been the case for a number of years that the pro models of an iPhone series have a slightly faster processor than the regular models. For example, with the iPhone 15 (plus) we saw an A16 Bionic chip and with the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) an A17 Pro chip. With the iPhone 16 series, that difference became slightly smaller: the iPhone 16 (Plus) has an A18 chip and the iPhone 16 Pro (Max) an A18 Pro chip.
The latter appears to continue Apple with the iPhone 17 series, possibly with one exception: the iPhone 17 Air. We expect an A19 chip for the iPhone 17. The iPhone 17 Pro (Max) will probably get an A19 Pro chip. The iPhone 17 Air replaces the Plus model, but, according to rumors, may still get an A19 Pro chip. If that’s right, only the iPhone 17 gets an A19 chip. That is still a great upgrade compared to the A18 chip in the iPhone 16.
A19 chip for more speed
The A19 chip in the iPhone 17 naturally has a number of advantages compared to the A18 chip. To start with, the new processor provides more speed. Whether you notice that immediately in practice is questionable, but the processor can in any case process more data in less time.
With 8 GB, the amount of memory remains the same as the amount of the iPhone 16. An upgrade to 12 GB would have made the iPhone 17 even faster. The 8 GB is, however, sufficient for support from Apple Intelligence.
The A19 chip of the iPhone 17 is also a bit more energy efficient than the A18 chip and that most likely has a positive effect on the battery life. How much is not yet clear at the moment, but the chance that you will notice something of this in practice is certainly present.
Finally, iPhones with an A19 chip receive support for software updates a year longer than iPhones with an A18 chip!
