New scams via SMS (and WhatsApp): this way you stay safe

Do you regularly receive messages from unknown numbers? Then you have to be careful, because there is a good chance that it is a scam via SMS or WhatsApp. This way you stay safe from these types of spam messages!

Scams via SMS and WhatsApp

It is known that scammers are increasingly using messaging services to steal information or money from people. This is done via spam messages, which are sent in the form of an SMS or chat message. A new scam via SMS and WhatsApp has now emerged, where you receive a message informing you that an iPhone is linked to your bank account.

Have you received a similar message recently? Then there is a good chance that it is a scam via WhatsApp or SMS. It may happen that certain information is correct by chance, but in most cases the data in the message is incorrect. For example, the iPhone mentioned does not correspond to the model you actually have, or you are a customer of a different bank. In that case, be careful, because the link in the spam message probably leads to an unsafe web page.

New scams via SMS (and WhatsApp): this way you stay safe

Do you suspect that you are dealing with scams via WhatsApp or SMS? Receiving spam messages is usually not a problem. What you do with it next is important. Messages containing scams are often closed with a link. Only when you click on it will you be redirected to a website that is not safe. Therefore, never click on a link in a (spam) message from an unknown sender.

By placing a link in the spam message, scammers try to steal data from you. Never share information such as usernames, passwords or bank details via these types of links. If malicious parties collect this data, they gain access to important accounts, especially because they are already aware of your number in the event of a scam via WhatsApp or SMS. Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly difficult to tell the difference between authentic messages and spam messages, so always be alert.

More tips to avoid scams

It is good to know that your bank never requests data via SMS or WhatsApp. Are you unsure whether you are dealing with a spam message? In that case, please consult the bank’s (or company’s) customer service via the official website. Inquire there about the message you received, you will then know immediately whether it concerns potential scams via WhatsApp or SMS. Is that the case? Then immediately delete the spam message from your phone, so that you can no longer accidentally tap it.

Scammers are known to spread similar messages via SMS and WhatsApp, but also be careful with other messaging services. Many spam messages with unsafe links are also shared via Telegram and Messenger. We previously explained how to distinguish between authentic messages and spam. Keep these tips at hand if you receive a message from an unknown sender and suspect you are dealing with scammers. This way you prevent yourself from becoming a victim of fraud.
