New screen for the Apple Watch delayed again – here’s why

Apple is reportedly working on a new screen for the Apple Watch, but the launch of this screen has been postponed again. What is going on?

Apple is working on a new screen for Apple Watch

The rumors that Apple is working on a new type of screen have been going on for some time. All versions of the Apple Watch now have an OLED screen, but in the future this should become a micro-LED screen. This new screen would be used by Apple from 2024, but has now been postponed again. Displays expert Ross Young now expects the screen to arrive at the end of 2025.

The future model of the Apple Watch Ultra will therefore still have to make do with an OLED screen. It was previously expected that the successor to the current Apple Watch Ultra would be Apple’s first device with a micro-LED screen. That plan is now off the table. But why exactly?

New screen for the Apple Watch delayed again – here’s why

Technical problems cause (major) delays

The fact that Apple has now chosen to postpone the new micro-LED screens is probably due to technical problems. It is quite difficult to make these screens and the costs of this production process are very high. So it’s up to Apple to find a way to make the screens affordable.

Apple plans to provide all iPhones, iPads and Macs with its own micro-LED screens in the future. Now the company is still dependent on, for example, Samsung and LG for the production of all screens. However, the big challenge when extending micro-LED to multiple devices is the size of the (expensive) screen. That is why Apple is first bringing micro-LED to the smaller devices.

Micro LED: brighter colors and a wider viewing angle

By producing micro-LED screens itself, Apple is therefore less dependent on other companies, but this is not the only advantage. For example, micro-LED screens have brighter and brighter colors. The screens also get a wider viewing angle. This way, you can still clearly see the time on your Apple Watch with the new screen, even from the most slanted angle.

The colors of these screens also remain good for a long time. This is the biggest advantage of micro-LED: the quality of the screen is guaranteed and does not deteriorate after a while, as is the case with OLED. Sustainability is such a big advantage of micro LED. This way, your Apple Watch will last a little longer with the new screen.
