Today, Volkswagen is introducing two new models of the eighth generation Volkswagen Golf: the Golf Variant estate and the Golf Alltrack. The latter is now a separate model that is a cross between an estate and an SUV.

Volkswagen is expanding the new generation of the Golf. From now on, the Alltrack is no longer a specific version of the Variant, but a stand-alone model. It therefore has the appearance of a crossover, a junction of the station wagon and an SUV. In addition to specific bumpers, this body type has a separate interior. The Alltrack is also higher above the ground, it has 4Motion permanent four-wheel drive and you can pull a trailer up to 2,000 kg with it.

The Golf Variant station wagon

Because the length and wheelbase of the new Golf Variant has grown by 66 mm (now 4,633 meters and 2,686 meters respectively), the station wagon has slightly more beautiful proportions. The fact that the roofline is sloping and the rear windows to the side resemble those of a coupé does not mean that you are tight on the inside: the passengers in the rear benefit from at least 48 mm of extra legroom. In addition, extra items fit in the luggage compartment; the minimum 611 liters of space can be expanded to no less than 1,642 liters. Optionally you can order an electrically operated rear flap.

Introduction of mild hybrid

The showroom launch of the Golf Variant – which starts in Germany today and is expected here soon – is accompanied by a new, mild hybrid drive. This eTSI powertrain, always equipped with a DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission, provides ‘significantly lower fuel consumption’. For example, a 48V starter / generator and lithium-ion battery make it possible to ‘sail’, drive on without using the turbo petrol engine.

The TDI engines for the Volkswagen Golf Variant also feature an innovation: ‘twin dosing’ or ‘dual AdBlue’ injection. This means that the diesel power sources have two SCR catalysts that reduce nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions even further.
