No greater delay expected from German Tesla factory

German Federal Minister of Economy and Energy Peter Altmaier said on Monday that he does not expect a major delay around the construction of the new Tesla factory just outside of Berlin. The opening is scheduled for 2021.

Although the site for the factory in the municipality of Grünheide has been ready for some time, construction work has not yet started. Tesla, according to local media, is working on the latest application procedures for approval before the start of construction. In addition, the coronavirus outbreak has caused some delay.

According to Altmaier, the planned start of production in 2021 will not be jeopardized, as no major further delays are expected. Next year, the new Tesla Model Y will be released in Germany. For the first phase of production, Tesla counts on 10,000 copies per week.

At the beginning of this year there was still some uncertainty around the factory. Environmentalists tried to disrupt the construction of the factory, because it had to cut down a piece of forest. There were also concerns about the wildlife that lived there. Ultimately, the German court decided that Tesla should continue.
