Note: Hidden text on screenshots can still be read (in this way)

Have you hidden sensitive text on a screenshot? Then pay attention, because this text can be read in some cases. That’s how you prevent it!

Hidden text on iPhone

In recent years it has become much easier to edit screen photos on your iPhone. Immediately after making a screenshot you get the opportunity to add (on) drawings or other operations on your iPhone. Do you make a screenshot of a document, conversation or other written text? Then with edits in screenshots you can also ensure that certain text is hidden.

Text is easy to hide in the post -processing of a screen photo. You can get a black stripe through the text that you don’t want the recipient to see. Now it appears that it is easier than expected to read this hidden text again. Sensitive information can therefore be unintentionally visible to the recipient, while you are assuming it has been erased. This is how hidden text can be read:

This is how you prevent it

Do you share a screenshot with text that you don’t want the recipient to be able to read everything? Pay close attention when hiding this text, because in some cases the text can be retrieved again by the recipient. It is about text that is hidden with the marker on the iPhone. If the recipient increases the brightness of the screenshot, this text becomes visible. Do you want to prevent that? Then choose the following setting when editing a screenshot:

  1. Go to the screen that you want to take a photo;

  2. Make a screenshot on your iPhone by pressing the lock and bottom volume button at the same time;

  3. Tap the screenshot in the left corner and choose the marker at the top right;

  4. When editing the image, select the marker on the left;

  5. Tap the colored ball next to the plus button (+);

  6. Choose the black color at the top right and tap the screen photo again;

  7. Finally, put a line through the text you want to hide.

When editing the image, it is important to choose the marker in the left corner. This marker is not translucent, unlike the marker you can use when editing screenshots. With the marker you know for sure that the text on the screenshot is really hidden and can not be retrieved later by editing the photo. This way you prevent screens that you share via, for example, WhatsApp give away more information than you actually want.

Do you regularly make screenshots on your iPhone, where you hide text in documents or conversations? Pay close attention when choosing the marker after making the screenshot, because it determines whether the text can be viewed later. Certainly with sensitive information, it is not intended that it will be viewed by the recipient.

Do you want to be sure that your hidden text on screenshots will not be read unintentionally? In that case you can also choose to cut the text off the screen photo, provided that that is possible.
