Opinion: Why the iPhone 13 really needs usb-c

Sparks are flying in the world of smartphone chargers. USB-C is making great strides while Lightning, Apple’s counterpart to this charging standard, has been stagnant for years. It is therefore high time that Apple switched and included the upcoming iPhone 13 USB-C.

Why the iPhone 13 needs usb-c

As far as I am concerned, smartphones have become quite boring in recent years. Every new generation is of course faster and better than the predecessor, but that is the least you can expect.

We haven’t seen really big innovations for a while now. Most new phones are barely distinguishable from each other in terms of design, have roughly the same functions and the shortcomings are usually quite similar.

The biggest innovation in the smartphone field that I have experienced in recent years is therefore less spectacular than you might expect. Right, we’re going to talk about charging speed.

Fast charging is great

For our sister site, Android Planet, I tested the OnePlus 8T. This phone is not revolutionary in any way, but it opened my world when it comes to charging speed.

The device has Warp Charge 65, a fast charging technology that allows the smartphone to charge with 65 watts of power. If we translate this marketing jargon into ordinary human language, it says here that the OnePlus 8T can charge very quickly.

Warp Charge 65 ensures that the battery of the phone is completely full in half an hour. Can you only recharge for ten minutes? Then you still have enough energy to be able to move forward for at least half a day.

If we compare that with the charging speed of the iPhone 12, Apple comes off poorly. The Cupertino company claims that their phones can ‘fast charge’, but it does not go beyond 20 watts.

Apple is lagging behind

And that’s a pitiful, if not major, flaw of Apple. Where most developments in the smartphone world are not so exciting, sparks are flying in the world of smartphone chargers.

For example, the organization behind usb-c announced that it was a has developed a new kind of charging cable. This cable can transmit power with no less than 240 Watts of power.

It is not yet known when the new charging cable will be in the shops, but as soon as it goes on sale you can literally fully charge a (suitable) telephone in a few minutes.

Of course you also need a suitable adapter (charging block) for this, but this is being worked on. Released at the end of last year Xiaomi for example the Mi 10 Ultra from. This unit comes with a 120 Watt charger. Yes, this device uses a USB-C charger.

Why Apple Should Let Go of Lightning

It is therefore the time for Apple to connect to USB-C and leave its own Lightning connection for what it is. Apple is of course an idiosyncratic (and, according to some, downright obnoxious) company, but the advantages of usb-c can no longer be ignored.

The charging stand, for example, is worn much wider than Lightning. This is handy, because it allows you to power both your laptop and smartphone with the same charger. This saves a lot of e-waste, or electronic waste, because you no longer have to get separate chargers for every device at home.

This should sound like music to Apple’s ears. The company decided to supply the iPhone 12 without a charger as standard, in order to stop the growing mountain of electronic waste. It is time for Apple to take these words to heart and give the iPhone 13 USB-C.

On to the iPhone 13

This fall, Apple will present the iPhone 13. According to rumors, the iPhone of 2021 consists of a total of four models. In addition to direct successors to the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, we also expect to see a smaller entry-level model and a new iPhone 12 Pro Max.

In the video below, we briefly discuss the most important iPhone 13 rumors with you. In the run-up to the official presentation iPhone of course the place for all your news about the new iPhone. It is best to follow us via the website, newsletter or our free app.
