OPPO unveiled its latest OPPO Air Glass 3 prototype that integrates XR and AI at MWC24 and demonstrated AI features including the OPPO AI Eraser. OPPO also announced that its products to be launched in Europe in 2024 will be equipped with OPPO’s latest generative AI features.

OPPO has unveiled a prototype of its new generation of Assisted Reality glasses, the OPPO Air Glass 3, at the MWC 2024 trade show in Barcelona. The Air Glass 3 accesses OPPO’s AndesGPT model via a smartphone, offering a new AI experience . Based on years of technical experience in AI, the brand has established the OPPO AI Center. Thus, OPPO aims to explore a broader range of user-centric AI products and features.

Multimodal AI technology understands different types of data such as text, images, video and audio. This allows the technology to process and interpret more complex user scenarios, opening up new possibilities for user interactions such as speech and visuals. While extended reality (XR) devices offer new possibilities for implementing these features, they require both advanced functionality and lightweight design to truly take on the role of a personal, everyday smart assistant. Driven by this vision, OPPO has introduced the brand new OPPO Air Glass 3 prototype to explore the possibilities of AI technology based on collaboration between XR devices and smartphones.
The OPPO Air Glass 3 weighs only 50 grams and has a self-developed waveguide with a refractive index of 1.70, a screen brightness uniformity of more than 50% and a peak brightness for the eyes of more than 1,000 nits. Together, these ensure that the OPPO Air Glass 3 offers a wearing experience that comes close to that of regular glasses, while also offering the best full-color display of its kind. With access to OPPO AndesGPT via the Air Glass app on the smartphone, users simply need to lightly press the temple of the OPPO Air Glass 3 to activate the AI voice assistant and perform a series of tasks.

The OPPO Air Glass 3 supports touch interaction, which allows for easy control of functions such as playing music, voice calling, displaying information, browsing color images and many more. The glasses also feature reverse sound field technology, an open acoustic design with four microphones and other innovations that improve sound isolation for high sound quality and enhanced privacy protection.

New OPPO AI Center embraces AI
OPPO has long invested in AI and the development of AI functions. At OPPO ODC 2023, the company introduced its first self-trained generative AI model, AndesGPT, with dialogue enhancement, personalization and collaboration between cloud devices. As of December 31, 2023, OPPO applied for more than 3,160 global patents related to AI.
On February 20, OPPO established the OPPO AI Center, a new center that will allow the company to better focus on AI R&D and drive forward-thinking, user-centric exploration of technology and applications. In this way, OPPO wants to make the benefits of AI accessible to everyone.
According to OPPO, the products launched in Europe in 2024 will be equipped with advanced generative AI capabilities, including the innovative OPPO AI Eraser function. OPPO aims to pioneer the cutting edge of AI and make AI technology more accessible to users worldwide.
“After feature phones and smartphones, next-gen AI smartphones will represent the third major transformation phase in the mobile phone industry. In the era of AI smartphones, both the mobile phone industry and the user experience will undergo revolutionary changes,” said Pete Lau, Chief Product Officer of OPPO. “At OPPO, we want to become a contributor and promoter of AI smartphones.”

aI-ecosystem through joint innovation
A mature AI ecosystem requires open collaboration across the industry. OPPO wants to fully support the establishment of this ecosystem. Therefore, OPPO’s efforts in AI extend far beyond its own innovations and include a diverse portfolio of collaborations with a range of global partners.
At this year’s MWC, OPPO joins the startup AlpsenTek and Qualcomm, who are jointly developing Hybrid Vision Sensing technologies with the new AI Motion algorithm. Developed under OPPO, AI Motion can perform image blurring and image interpolation at high frame rates for use in high-speed cameras, based on a combination of traditional RBG image data and EVS (Event Vision Sensing) motion data. With AI Motion, smartphones offer advanced solutions for blurring images and photos, making it possible to capture true 960 fps slow-motion videos in 4K resolution. Using EVS data for precise alignment of moving objects between frames improves both dynamic range and resolution. This technological integration offers exciting possibilities for capturing images and videos, increasing the potential for creative content creation.
