Your iPhone gets a new payment option! PayPal makes it possible to pay contactless without using Apple Pay. That’s how it is.
PayPal is coming to Apple Pay
Do you regularly use PayPal? Then we have good news, because the payment service rolls out a new position. PayPal makes it possible for the first time to pay with your iPhone, without using Apple Pay. Instead, the PayPal application itself offers the option to add a payment card. You can then use that payment card for making payments, without your Apple Pay or the Apple Wallet needing.
In this way PayPal offers an important new function, because this is the first alternative service that offers contactless payment via the iPhone. Previously this was only possible via Apple Pay, because Apple did not open the NFC chip of the smartphone to third parties. As a result, other services such as PayPal could not use the NFC chip and payments only went through Apple Pay or the Apple Wallet. That is now changing, because PayPal can finally use the NFC chip.
NFC chip prepared
Apple has drawn up the NFC chip with iOS 18.1 for third parties. That did not happen completely voluntarily, because this is the result of new European legislation. He forced Apple to open the NFC chip to developers to give competitors a fairer chance. That is now the case, because in addition to Apple Pay you can soon choose PayPal. As a user you are no longer dependent on Apple Pay.
Apple has already released iOS 18.1 in October 2024, since then it has been possible for developers to use the NFC chip. That has not happened yet, but PayPal changes that. PayPal finally offers an alternative to Apple Pay and the Apple Wallet. The payment service comes with its own digital payment card in the app and a new wallet for the iPhone. You can set this as a standard wallet, instead of the Apple wallet that is now used as a digital wallet as standard.
Release of PayPal Wallet
The PayPal Card in the application of the payment service is now available in Germany. German users are given the opportunity to add the PayPal payment card and use the Wallet of the Payment Service. Germany is the first country in which users can use PayPal as an alternative to Apple Pay on the iPhone. It is expected that PayPal will also bring this option to other countries soon.
That means that Dutch users will probably also get an alternative to Apple Pay later this year. There is a good chance that many more payment options will be added in the long term, now that the NFC chip has been opened by Apple. Developers need time to add the NFC chip to Apps software, which has now succeeded at PayPal. That is probably the start of more payment options, which are competition for Apple Pay. For users it is good news, because they will soon be able to decide for themselves what they choose.
