There will be no foldable Pixel phone or Pixel Fold as it would be called. According to sources, Google scrapped the project because it lacked confidence in the product. Still, it spent two years working on the Pixel Fold.
No Pixel Fold
This fall, Google has unleashed its Pixel 6 series on the world, or at least in the selection of countries where it is available. According to rumors of the past year and a half, Google would also surprise us with the arrival of the first foldable Pixel phone, but that foldable will not appear on the market, according to new information.
It is Ross Young, chief executive of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) who knows that Google has canceled its orders for foldable display panels. He writes that on Twitter. The DSCC is an organization that oversees the industry of all types of screen panels. Google stopped the project because it didn’t believe in the success of the Pixel Fold. Young believes price was a deciding factor, as the phone would likely have cost consumers more than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 had it actually appeared.
Outdated camera
The Pixel Fold has been in development for two years and we heard the first rumors about the existence of this foldable phone in July 2020. According to the latest information early this month, Google would postpone the project until 2022. The Pixel Fold would also come with a slightly outdated camera setup, namely one that was based on the camera of the Pixel 5: a 12.2 MP main camera combined with a 12 MP wide angle sensor.
The Pixel Fold was originally slated to launch in 2021. The phone would have appeared at a time when Google also wanted to roll out Android 12L, which is a new version of Android that comes with improvements especially for foldable phones and tablets.
