Special news in van country for which we are going to the United States. The Ram Promaster is getting a facelift, but an eight-year-old one!
Under the flag of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Dodge was not averse to taking over models from Fiat. Even now that Stellantis has taken over, the company still sells two Fiat models. The Promaster City and the larger Promaster. The latter is an only optically marginally modified Fiat Ducato that was brought to the United States in 2013. A year later, the original – the Ducato – was thoroughly facelifted in Europe. Just like its European brothers Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Jumper, the Ducato was fitted with a completely new front in 2014. The Ram Promaster never got that front, but that’s finally changing.
Yes, the Ram Promaster is undergoing a facelift that is now about eight years old. The curved headlights placed high in the front give way to flatter and wider ones that are housed a bit lower. Once again, the Promaster gets its own grille that differs from that of the Ducato, although the whole still looks nicely crafted. The van has a grille with the brand name written in large. There are two extensions on either side of that name, and the grille is framed by a chrome-colored element that extends far below the headlights. A piece of Aries genes, shall we say. The Promaster is available with a 3.6 V6 petrol engine that produces about 280 hp.
Although the Ram Promaster lags behind the Fiat Ducato, the Ducato is certainly not a young model anymore. The current model dates back to 2006. Despite its advanced age, Stellantis decided quite recently to replace the younger Renault Master, still under the management of General Motors as Movano, to Opel, with the Ducato, logically with a Stellantis model.
Do Fiat’s with a somewhat clumsy Ram nose also strike a slightly out of tune but surprisingly nice sounding chord with you? Then please read on. Ram sells its own version of the Fiat Strada in the form of the 700. Then there’s the Ram Promaster City, basically a Fiat Doblò with a slightly clunky Ram nose. The Fiat cake at Ram is far from over, because in the form of this 1000, the brand still has a Fiat pick-up on the menu. That 1000 is a Fiat Toro on which Ram has printed his own badges. That Ram also borrows models from other departments of companies, is apparent from the 1200. That is a brother of the Fiat Fullback, which was also delivered in the Netherlands, which in fact was of course a Mitsubishi L200.
