Release airtag 2 leaked: this is the expected date (and these are the functions)

A new generation of the airtag is coming! We reportedly do not have to wait long for the release of the airtag 2. The generally reliable Apple analyst Mark Gurman indicated earlier that the new airtag appears in the spring of 2025. New rumors confirm this now, because according to Kosutami, the airtag 2 will also come this spring. He expects the device in May or June 2025 is announced.

Kosutami has previously spread rumors, which later turned out to be correct. Now that both Gurman and Kosutami expect that the airtag 2 will be in the spring of 2025, chances are that the official release will not be long waiting. Apple also presented the first generation of the airtag in the spring. The airtag was unveiled by Apple on April 20, 2021 via a press release. Possibly the airtag 2 will be around the same date this year.

New functions

In addition to the expected release of the airtag 2, rumors also reveal which functions are coming to the device. The second generation of the airtag gets the U2 chip, making the reach of the tracker three times as large as with the current airtag. Apple used the same chip in the iPhone 15 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2. This makes the precise location of these devices visible within a range of sixty meters.

With the current airtag, that range is still between ten and thirty meters, which means that the U2 chip ensures a major improvement with the device. In addition, according to rumors, the airtag 2 gets a new speaker, which is more difficult to remove from the housing. The speaker is an important part to find the airtag, especially if an unknown airtag moves with you. The improved speaker must prevent the airtag from being abused for stalking.

Price of the airtag 2

No changes in the design of the airtag are expected. Apple again opts for a round housing and the airtag works with a button cell battery. Unfortunately, it is not possible to charge the airtag 2, but the device is probably more energy efficient. As a result, the airtag 2 lasts longer than the first generation of the tracker. With the original airtag, the battery life sometimes causes problems, especially after a longer period of time.

It is not yet known what price the airtag 2 will receive. Apple currently sells the airtag for 39 euros each, or for 129 euros for four pieces. It is expected that Apple will take over these starting prices at the second generation. That means that the airtag 2 is available for 39 euros from May or June 2025.
