Research shows that the iPhone 12 is more popular than its predecessor, the iPhone 11. The more expensive Pro models in particular are quite popular. According to the researchers, this is due to the support for 5G.
iPhone 12 sales are booming
The research was conducted by Counterpoint Research, an American consultancy. Counterpoint claims that the iPhone 12, which came out at the end of 2020, is slightly more popular shortly after release than the iPhone 11 from 2019.
The company compared the figures from the first quarter of 2021 with the same period a year earlier. This shows that 16 percent of all iPhones that were activated at the beginning of this year were an iPhone 12. The iPhone 11 came in at 15 percent a year earlier.
‘The iPhone 12 Pro is especially popular’
The differences in the Pro models are greater. According to Counterpoint, no less than 54 percent of Apple phones activated at the beginning of this year were an iPhone 12 Pro (Max). The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max reached 44 percent last year.
Counterpoint thinks the latest iPhones are more popular because of 5G. The iPhone 12 phones can handle the latest version of the cellular network and are therefore more future-proof. The iPhone 11 (and Pro phones) can handle up to 4G.
The research is not based on sales figures, but on the number of activations within a certain period. Counterpoint has therefore looked at how many iPhones have been activated and makes a calculation based on this to indicate the popularity.
