Samsung has changed the specifications of the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus. The screen now has a variable refresh rate of 48-120Hz instead of 10-120Hz. Samsung doesn’t use LTPO screens with the phones, but it does for the Ultra variant.
Samsung changes specifications S22 series
It’s not every day that a manufacturer changes specifications after introducing a new lineup of phones. Yet it is what Samsung does with its latest flagships. It is a detail regarding the refresh rate of the devices and the change was noticed on Samsung’s website by Ross Youngthe CEO of DSCC or ‘Display Supply Chain Consultants’.
In the specifications of the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus, Samsung never used the term “LTPO display,” which refers to a display with a variable refresh rate. The phones, on the other hand, have a panel with a slightly simpler LTPS technology that still allows a variable refresh rate, just not from 1-120Hz.
This has been changed
We originally read in the specifications that the screen of the Galaxy S22 and the S22 Plus can switch between a refresh rate of ’10-120Hz’, but that has now been adjusted to ’48-120Hz’. Samsung does not share a statement explaining why that adjustment was made. The error may have arisen in demos when the screens reached a processing speed below 48 Hz and so that was also included in the specifications. So it has now become possible that production models do not achieve such a lower refresh rate, according to Ross Young on Twitter.
This specification change does not change the specifications of the LTPO display used in the Galaxy S22 Ultra. That panel does have a refresh rate that ranges from 1-120Hz. It does mean that the only improvement that the S22 and the Plus version have in terms of screen technology has to do with brightness. The S21 series panels appeared with a peak brightness of 1,300 nits compared to 1,750 nits in the S22 series. Whether that is also a good upgrade in practice will become apparent from our review of the S22 series. You can already read about the first impressions of the Androidworld editors.
