See visited locations in Google Maps

See visited locations in Google MapsWant to see which places you visited in May last year, during the holidays, or just last Saturday? You can do that with the Google Maps timeline.

A part of Google Maps is the so-called timeline. This overview shows which locations someone visited with their smartphone (which contains the Google Maps app). That works not only in the Netherlands, but also abroad, even without an internet connection. The function works via the GPS on the mobile phone. Users are of course not obliged to share their location (history) with Google Maps. Only then some functions are not available. So first consider whether you’re okay with sharing your location.

Do you want to view the timeline? This is how it works via the app on smartphones and tablets:

  • Open the Maps app.
  • Tap the circle with your profile picture or initials in the top right.
  • Tap on Your timeline.
  • When using for the first time, tap To work.
  • You will see the current day, along with the locations associated with it. Tap on Today to switch to another day.
  • Swipe from left to right to go to a previous month.
  • Tap a day to see more information.
  • Tap an individual item, such as a car trip, a visit to a store or restaurant to show more specifically what time you got there.

You can also view per place how often you have been there.

  • In Maps, tap the circle at the top right where your profile picture is.
  • Tap on Your timeline.
  • Tap on Places, Towns or World.
    • Places: Shows categories such as shopping, food and drink, sports or culture.
    • Cities: Tap a city to see different locations visited in that city.
    • World: choose the country, then select a city.

While a computer won’t go on outings, of course, you can use it to view the timeline. It goes like this:

  • Go to www.google.nl/maps
  • Sign in with a Google account if you are not already signed in.
  • Click the icon with the three dashes on the left side of the page.
  • click on Your timeline.
  • On the first visit there is a short explanation. Always click on the arrows to continue. Click on the last point Compare the moments.
  • Under ‘Timeline’, click Year and select a year.
  • Under ‘Timeline’, click Month and select a month.
  • Under ‘Timeline’, click on Day and select a date.

Google shows which places you have been. Click on one of the red dots on the map to see what kind of place it is. Click again for more details.
