Start with Signal, alternative to WhatsApp

Start with Signal, alternative to WhatsAppLooking for an alternative to WhatsApp? Then try the privacy-friendly messaging app Signal.

Send text messages, share photos or quickly send a video to a contact. With messaging app Signal (pronounced: ‘siknal’), users can do exactly the same as with the well-known WhatsApp. But Signal is more careful with users’ data.

Since WhatsApp became part of Facebook, some users have concerns about the privacy of the app. Because Facebook does everything it can to collect as much information about users as possible. Even if this invades privacy.

WhatsApp’s new terms of use state that parent company Facebook will now receive more information about WhatsApp users, such as phone number, IP address and address book. This does not apply to EU citizens, because strict privacy legislation does not allow it here. Still, many people don’t like the information hunger of Facebook, so they look for an alternative. The new WhatsApp terms and conditions would come into effect on February 8, but it has since been announced that they will be postponed to May 2021.

Signal is one of the alternatives that WhatsApp users end up with. But what makes this messaging app privacy-friendly?

  • Like WhatsApp, Signal encrypts the messages that are sent. Only the sender and receiver can read the content.
  • Unlike WhatsApp, Signal also secures the metadata. This is information about what time a message was sent, from which location, with which IP address, from what device, etc. As a user, you do not see the metadata in WhatsApp, but the information is collected behind the scenes. This does not happen with Signal.
  • Signal only shares data about users if there is a legal obligation to do so.
  • Every chat has a unique security code. This allows you to verify that the interlocutor is really who you think it is.
  • Signal is open source. That means anyone (who gets it) can see how the software is made and verify that Signal does what it promises behind the scenes.

As mentioned, Signal is a free communication app. But the sun rises for nothing, so this app also has to make money from something, right? That’s right, Signal makes money from donations.
