Have you already started updating your iPhone, but you don’t want to install the software on your phone? We will tell you how to stop an iOS update in that case!
Errors in new software versions
New software updates are regularly released for all your Apple devices. These are major updates with new functions for recent models, but older generations also receive security updates. Software versions with new functions in particular sometimes cause problems, for example the release of iOS 17 and watchOS 10 was accompanied by annoying bugs.

It therefore does not hurt to wait a little longer before installing the update. Have you already downloaded the new software version on your iPhone? Then it is not too late to stop the iOS update. In any case, you do not need to have the latest software version installed on the device yet. We will explain to you how to remove the new update from your iPhone.
Stop an iOS update
To update your iPhone to the latest iOS version, you need to go through several steps. You must first request the update in your iPhone’s settings, then the latest software version will be downloaded. In that case, the software is on your device, but your iPhone has not yet been updated. Do you still not want to install the update? Then you can stop the iOS update as follows:
- Open ‘Settings’ on your iPhone;
- Go to ‘General > iPhone Storage’;
- Search the list for ‘Software update’;
- Tap ‘Software Update’ and choose ‘Remove Update’.
Once you tap ‘Remove update’, the new software version will no longer be on your iPhone. Your phone will therefore not be automatically updated later in the day or at night. Do you want to keep the update, but not install it yet? Then go to ‘Settings > General > Software update > Cancel update > Cancel automatic installation’. This way you stop the iOS update, but the file remains on your iPhone.
So this is an easy way to stop installing the latest iOS update, so you don’t have to deal with annoying bugs in the new software. It is then wise to wait for the next (interim) update from Apple. Apple often resolves major software problems quickly, so you don’t have to wait long for the new features.
Restore backup to your iPhone
You must therefore be in time to stop installing the iOS update, because this is no longer possible once the software has been installed on your iPhone. In that case, the device has been restarted and is already running the latest iOS version. Do you still want to go back to the previous version of iOS? That is still possible, but you do need a computer or laptop.

You can restore an old backup of your iPhone to the device. This way you can go back to iOS 16, provided the backup was made when your iPhone was still running that software version. So always make sure that you make a backup of your device before installing an update. Couldn’t stop the iOS update and want to restore an old backup?
