Subaru Forester Facelift Friday

The first generation of the Subaru Forester was in fact already a crossover, although that term was not yet popular at the time. With its high, yet station wagon-like carriage, it is still a very recognizable car to this day. The first Forester received a facelift in 2000, with the rear in particular being heavily modified.

The first Forester appeared in 1997. Since 2018 we have been working on the fifth generation, which still has the same basic shape with a little imagination. A fairly high side window, remarkably flat bonnet and relatively upright front and rear window have given this sturdy Subaru its quirky, functional appearance for 25 years.

The facelift that was implemented in 2000 is, at first glance, one from the book. The hood extends slightly further down from the turn of the century, so that the headlights and grille could be slightly rounded. The headlights also received clear glass, the grille a new layout. Depending on the version, that meant black, sporty mesh or more chrome, in the form of vertical bars.

Just like last week, however, the big news with this Forester is at the back. There, the rear lights are extended to the lid, so that each unit now consists of two parts. The number of colors is reduced from three to two, although there was already a rare rear light with white glass for the indicators before the facelift. Although wider, the new rear lights are less high. As a result, they no longer connect directly to the bumper at the bottom.

After the facelift, the rear lights are a lot wider, but less high.

In its newer form, the primal Forester will last until 2002. In that year, generation 2 will arrive, which will undergo an even more radical facelift a few years later.
