Superfluous function of Spotify: this way you switch off private messages

Spotify has introduced private messages! Do you not want to receive messages in Spotify at all? This way you switch off the superfluous function.

Private reports Spotify

There is another update for Spotify available! The music service introduces private messages in the new software version. After installing the update, it is possible to send and receive messages. This makes it much easier to share songs, albums and podcasts with other users. You can send private messages to all users in Spotify, if they approve your conversation request.

The same applies the other way around, because other users can also send you a request. Spotify shows proposed users when sending private messages. These are users with whom you have previously shared a playlist, who are part of the same subscription or with which you have already been in a jam. Do you not want to receive private messages in Spotify at all? Then you can also completely switch off the new function.

This is how you turn out private messages

Have you installed the latest software version from Spotify? In that case, private messages are on as standard in Spotify. That means that you can send and receive conversation requests. Don’t you want that? It is also possible to turn off the new function in Spotify, so that no private conversations are added to the application. Curious how you do that? Disabling private messages is as follows:

  1. Open Spotify on your iPhone;

  2. Go to the ‘Home’ tab in Spotify;

  3. Tap your profile photo at the top left;

  4. Choose ‘Settings and Privacy’;

  5. Go to ‘Privacy and Social’;

  6. Finally, turn off the switch behind ‘Messages’.

Did you switch off the switch? It is then no longer possible to send or receive private messages in Spotify. The menu with messages in that case disappears from the menu bar on the homepage. Do you want to receive and send messages, but not from all users? You can also block certain users so that they cannot start private conversations.

Tap your profile photo on the homepage again, choose ‘New Message’ and look for a username. Have you found the user? Then tap the three dots next to the username and choose ‘Block’. This user can no longer see your profile, no longer follow you and no longer view your listening activity. You will therefore no longer receive private messages from this user in Spotify.

More about Spotify

Spotify does not (yet) offer an option to limit private messages to your followers. It is therefore possible to send a conversation request to all users in the music service. That is not all, because in a private conversation you can also see which music you have previously shared with a contact person via, for example, WhatsApp. Once you have started a conversation, Spotify automatically shows which songs, albums and podcasts were sent to each other earlier.

You can only start private messages in Spotify at the moment, group discussions are not yet available. Do you prefer not to receive messages via Spotify? Then it is advisable to completely disable private messages, so that you do not use an application in which you can miss messages. Do you want to know more about Spotify?
