Switching from Google Maps: These are the best European alternatives

Google Maps is the most popular navigation app, but what alternatives do you have if you want to be less dependent on American tech companies?

European alternatives to Google Maps

More and more alternatives are being sought in Europe for American apps, such as a European replacement for Gmail. But what are your options if you no longer want to use Google Maps? Apple Maps is of course not an option and Waze has been owned by Google for quite some time. That’s why we introduce you to the best European alternatives to Google Maps, which also support CarPlay!

1. TomTom – Maps & Navigation

The Dutch TomTom is perhaps the best-known European navigation brand. The company started with separate navigation boxes, but you have been able to use the app on your iPhone for quite some time. TomTom offers very accurate traffic information and lane guidance, and offline maps are also (limited) available. The route calculation is reliable and the directions are clear. The only disadvantage is that you need a subscription for full use, but for most people the free version is sufficient.

2. HERE WeGo Maps & Navigation

HERE WeGo is originally German and focuses strongly on privacy and offline use. You can use the app to navigate by car, bicycle and public transport, and the offline maps are free. You also have much less trouble with tracking than with Google Maps. Real-time updates are available once you’re online, including emergency routes and traffic information. HERE WeGo is also one of the alternatives that is simpler than Google Maps. You can see this as a disadvantage, but the advantage is less distraction and a better view of what is really important. Unlike TomTom, HERE WeGo has no subscription costs.

3. Sygic GPS navigation & Maps

Sygic is a Slovak navigation app best known for its modern interface and extensive features. The app is mainly aimed at use in the car. Sygic has been around for a long time and has now grown into a navigation app that feels more complete and luxurious than the other alternatives here. So you not only get offline maps, but also a head-up display mode, speed warnings and 3D maps. Yet there is also a disadvantage: after a week you pay 15.99 euros per year for this app with premium features.

4.Organic Maps

If you want maximum privacy, we recommend Organic Maps of all alternatives. This open source app is completely based on OpenStreetMap, does not collect any personal data and is suitable for cars, bicycles, public transport and pedestrians. You can use the app completely offline, there are no ads and no tracking. Moreover, the app is light and therefore very fast. This also means that the app isn’t as comprehensive as Google Maps, but if you just want to get from A to B without having your location history saved, Organic Maps is perfect. Just don’t expect flash alerts.
