Tesla starts large-scale Model S and Model 3 recall

Tesla is recalling nearly half a million cars in the United States. This concerns 350,000 Model 3s built between 2017 and 2020 and 120,000 Model S. Both models suffer from specific problems. It is not yet known whether the recall will also have consequences in the Netherlands.

The recall has been filed with the US road safety regulator NHTSA. Both models are not being recalled for the same reason. With the Model 3, it is about opening and closing the trunk. In doing so, the wiring harness for the reversing camera can be damaged because it bends too far when closed. Tesla is placing extra protection for the cable with the recall. In the case of the Model S, the recall is actually related to the frunk. This concerns the secondary lock that is not positioned correctly. This can lead to the frunk opening unexpectedly while driving, with dire consequences.

In total, more than 475,000 Teslas are being recalled in the United States. That number is not much lower than the total number of electric cars that the company delivered in 2020. It is not yet known whether Dutch Tesla customers can also expect a letter for a recall on the mat soon. Tesla could not be reached by phone for comment. AutoWeek has requested a response to the recall by email.

Earlier this year, copies of the Model S and X had to be returned to the garage in the Netherlands due to a possible defect in the eMMC: a piece of hardware that is responsible for various functions in the car. Tesla then actively notified owners of the recall.
