You can now also use Apple Carplay in a Tesla. A Polish developer has made the necessary software available, but it does require quite a bit of technical knowledge.
Tesla with Apple CarPlay: still very difficult
It is a feature that has been on the wish list of many Tesla owners for years: Apple CarPlay. Still, Elon Musk doesn’t like it, because there is still no official support for Apple CarPlay from Tesla.
A few months ago, a Polish developer Michał Gapiński thought it was enough and came up with a way to get Apple CarPlay working in his Tesla. He did this with a pair of Raspberry Pis (a sort of mini computer, not much bigger than a stack of credit cards), a 4G modem, a WiFi dongle and the car’s built-in browser.
With this he managed to manage to use Android Auto (Android’s counterpart to Apple CarPlay). That is why his solution is also called The Tesla Android Project† With this he could then launch an app to load Apple CarPlay.
Downloadable for everyone
The necessary files are now available to everyone download from his website† There is also a step-by-step description (in English) of what you need and what you need to do to get Apple Carplay working with your Tesla. It is a fairly extensive step-by-step plan and you must have the necessary technical knowledge on board to install it.
However, the developer has indicated that you will soon only need one mini computer to use CarPlay. The installation should also be a lot faster and only take a few minutes of your time. In addition, the installation should be much easier.
