Apple will be making major changes to the App Store this year, allowing you to install apps in a completely different way. You need to know this!
Side loading coming
Big changes are coming to the App Store, as Apple is reportedly planning to sideloading to be introduced soon. It is then possible to put apps on your iPhone via Safari, for example, without needing the App Store. At the moment it is almost only possible to install apps from the Store on your iPhone. Side loading only comes to Europe because these adjustments are the result of new European legislation.

The App Store will therefore be split into two: one for Europe and one for other countries. The European Union has determined that Apple must create fairer competitive positions for app developers. These developers will soon also be able to offer apps on the internet, which can then be downloaded to iPhones and iPads. Yet Apple is probably not happy with the new legislation.

Developers avoid App Store fees
With this new way of downloading apps, app developers no longer have to give Apple a percentage of their revenue. Normally, developers have to pay to sell their apps on the App Store. As soon as apps can also be installed via another method, it is probably more beneficial not to do so via Apple. As a result, the company loses income.
The question is therefore how accessible Apple makes it sideloading of applications. At the launch of iOS 17, Apple said nothing about the changes being implemented in the App Store. Moreover, it is also up to Apple to ensure the security of iOS (and iPadOS). Of sideloading you can choose from many more apps, but they may also contain malware. It remains to be seen how Apple will tackle that problem.

This is when the update comes
We probably won’t have to wait much longer for the update, because Apple has to adhere to a deadline set by the European Union. It has determined that companies have until March 7, 2024 to comply with the new legislation. So Apple still has two months left sideloading in the App Store.

According to the usually reliable Apple expert Mark Gurman, Apple will release an update earlier. According to him, we can expect the modified App Store in a few weeks. Apple may add the new feature to iOS 17.3, which will probably be available at the end of January. Want to know what else will change in iOS 17.3? Then read all about the update here!
