The iPhone SE 4 will probably be released in the spring, so that will only take about three months. It is the first update of the iPhone SE in three years and probably the biggest innovation of the iPhone SE since the introduction of the budget device. These are the 5 upgrades you can expect on the iPhone SE 4:

1. A new design and a better screen

Apple has been using the iPhone 8 design since the iPhone SE 2 in 2020, with a 4.7-inch LCD screen, rounded corners and a home button. It looks like this is about to change for the first time.

The iPhone SE 4 will likely have a design similar to the iPhone 14, with a larger 6.1-inch OLED screen, a flat-edge design, Face ID, and the smaller notch. The device probably only has a single camera instead of the dual camera of the iPhone 14.

2. A USB-C connection

Unlike the iPhone 14 and the current iPhone SE, the iPhone SE 4 will probably no longer have a Lightning connector. This is mainly due to EU regulations that require all devices with a charging port to switch to a uniform connector, namely USB-C.

Apple switched to USB-C for the first time last year with the iPhone 15, so that the next iPhone SE will be the last iPhone to get the new connection. If you buy an iPhone SE, you can charge your phone with the same cable as your iPad and MacBook.

3. Better cameras

The iPhone SE 4’s camera will likely have the same 48 MP sensor as that of the iPhone 15, which is a huge leap forward over the 12 MP sensor of the iPhone SE 3 (and the iPhone 8).

We also expect the same 12 MP selfie camera on the iPhone SE 4 as on the iPhone 15. That is also a big leap forward compared to the 7 MP selfie camera of the iPhone SE 3.

4. Apple Intelligence

According to Apple expert Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, the iPhone SE 4 supports Apple Intelligence, which means it has an A18 chip and 8 GB of RAM. This is surprising in itself, but it seems that Apple wants Apple Intelligence to be used by as many people as possible.

Apple Intelligence introduces a plethora of new features, such as Writing Tools, Photos Clean Up, Genmoji, Image Playground, Notification Summaries, and an all-new Siri. Apple Intelligence is not yet available in the Netherlands, but that will probably change sometime next spring.

5. An Apple modem

The iPhone SE 4 is expected to have Apple’s very first proprietary modem, which the company has been working on for years. Apple took over modem production from Intel in 2019 with the intention of developing its own modems and distancing itself from Qualcomm. According to the latest rumors, Apple is using its first proprietary 5G modem, codenamed Centauri, in the iPhone SE 4. This modem will also be used for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.

Qualcomm’s 5G modems are one of the most expensive parts of the iPhone, so it makes sense that Apple is trying to move away from them. It could be one of the main factors why the iPhone SE 4 will be relatively cheap (we expect around 649 euros), despite being such a modern iPhone.
