The Photos App Has Completely Changed in iOS 18—Here’s How It Works!

If you have iOS 18 installed, you will immediately notice that the Photos app looks different. Fortunately, it is very easy to adjust.

After updating to iOS 18, can’t find photos in your iPhone’s Photos app? Then it’s time to customize the app to your own needs. We’ll explain how to do that!

Hide and sort collections

The Photos app in iOS 18 divides your photos into Collections. For example, you can now see Recent Days, People & Pets, and Trips. Chances are that you find this way too much and that it’s the main reason you can’t see the forest for the trees. Here’s how to adjust it:

  • Open the Photos app;
  • Scroll all the way down;
  • Tap ‘Customize and change order’.

To turn off Collections, simply tap on them. To change the order, simply drag them to the right place.

Hide screenshots

The Photos app in iOS 18 shows all your photos in one big grid. When you have a lot of screenshots makes, they are all just in there. That makes the whole thing rather confusing. There is a way to easily hide all those screenshots. It works like this:

  • Open the Photos app;
  • Swipe the screen down a bit;
  • Tap the double arrows at the bottom left;
  • Tap ‘Display Options’;
  • Disable the ‘Screenshots’ option.

Filter and sort

Still having trouble finding photos in the iOS 18 version of the Photos app? Use the filter and sorting options it has. Filtering is useful if you only want to see your photos, for example. favorites want to see, or just edited photosonly videosonly photosor only screenshots. You filter as follows:

  • Open the Photos app;
  • Swipe the screen down a bit;
  • Tap the double arrows at the bottom left;
  • Tap ‘Filter’;
  • Select the desired option(s).

You can then sort the results in two ways. The default is ‘Sort by recently added‘ enabled. This is useful in many cases, but it also includes photos that you have recently received. If you only want to see photos that you have taken yourself, the option ‘Sort by capture date‘ be useful. You will find both options if you repeat the first three steps above.
