iPhone 17 Pro (Max) gets a much better camera

There has been a rumor for some time that the 12 MP front camera in the current iPhones will be upgraded to 24 MP in the iPhone 17 lineup. The rumor also says that all three cameras on the back of the iPhone 17 Pro Max will have 48 MP sensors. A new rumor goes one step further and says that the new zoom camera will not only come to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, but also to the iPhone 17 Pro.

The iPhone 16 Pro models currently have a combination of 12 MP and 48 MP camera sensors:

  • Main camera: 48 MP
  • Ultra-wide angle: 48 MP (12 MP in the iPhone 15 Pro)
  • Zoom camera: 12 MP
  • Selfie camera: 12 MP

A better selfie camera

It has now been more than a year since that Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo announced that Apple would upgrade the selfie camera on the iPhone 17 models. He then said that the front camera of the iPhone 17 would have a 24 MP/6P lens and no longer a 12 MP/5P lens as in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16. According to him, this should significantly improve the image quality.

The reference to a 6P lens instead of a 5P lens refers to the number of elements in the lens. All other things being equal, more elements in a lens create less distortion.

Kuo also indicated that the zoom camera of the iPhone 17 Pro Max would be upgraded from 12 MP to 48 MP.

Weibo user Digital Chat Station now confirms these reports. He also indicates that both iPhone 17 Pro models will get the new zoom camera, not just the Pro Max. So this means that both iPhone 17 Pro models will get 48 MP lenses in all three cameras.
