In the second half of the 14th century, Europe was in crisis mode. Crop failures, economic crises, wars and last but not least the Black Death caused problems for the population. Little consolation could be expected from the clergy. After the popes had lived in the lap of luxury for around 70 years in Avignon in southern France, the return of the bishop from Rome to his home diocese was a complete failure. Now two popes were fighting for power, while sects and heresies were rampant...
