Cilicia, a coastal strip in the south of what is now Turkey, with its hidden bays and forested mountains offered a good shelter for pirates who had initially only been up to mischief in the east of the Mediterranean. Since about 75 BC The pirates became bolder and bolder, kidnapped rich Romans to extort ransom, hijacked Roman merchant ships and even attacked cities in Italy. Finally the Senate managed to send the general Gnaeus Pompeius to Cilicia with a large fleet.
