Waze is finally introducing a feature that many users have been asking for and that Google Maps has been offering since 2022.
This Google Maps feature is coming to Waze
The Google Maps feature we’re referring to is support for traffic lights and stop signs. This feature has been helping Google Maps users anticipate upcoming turns for more than three years, but it looks like Waze is finally catching up. According to a report from Geek time Waze is currently testing the feature in Israel, where the app was originally founded. Many of the developers still live and work there, even though the company was acquired by Google in 2013.
According to the report, the Google Maps feature in Waze is still in its very early stages. The number of traffic lights displayed at the same time is still limited to prevent the map from becoming overcrowded. During active navigation, the map would display up to three traffic lights at a time. This changes when you are not navigating: all traffic lights in the area are displayed.

Waze confirmed in May that traffic lights, stop signs and other important road signs would be added to the maps, after asking its users to vote in favor of the new features.
Also outside Israel
As mentioned, the traffic lights and stop signs feature in Google Maps was added years ago, as these are important reference points when approaching an intersection. This allows drivers to plan more effectively to drive in the correct lane for an upcoming exit. It is something that Apple Maps has also been offering for some time.
Since Waze is owned by Google, it stands to reason that Google will use the already existing traffic light data to roll out the feature outside of Israel soon. The two services are gradually becoming more and more similar, as Google Maps has already adopted most of the features that made Waze so popular. It is not yet known when we will see the new function in the Netherlands. Do you want to stay informed? Then sign up for our newsletter!
