An important function on the iPhone is disabled by default, even though it could save your life. This is how you enable the feature!
Life-saving iPhone feature
Your iPhone gets more functions every year, so there’s a good chance that you don’t know them all (yet). Some improvements are more important than other changes, but some iPhone settings can be lifesavers. One of those functions is sending an SOS emergency notification via your iPhone. With an emergency notification, the emergency services and your SOS contact persons are immediately contacted.
In this way, it is an important function of your iPhone that can save your life. There are several ways to send an SOS emergency notification on your iPhone, not all of which are enabled. For example, it is possible to send an emergency notification by pressing the lock button on your iPhone five times. It is wise to enable this option so that you always have the emergency services within reach. Curious how to do that? Here you will find the important iPhone function!

SOS emergency notification on your iPhone
Making an SOS emergency notification is one of the most important iPhone functions that can save your life in an emergency. On iPhone 14 and newer, you can activate an SOS emergency notification by pressing the lock button on your iPhone five times. You must enable this setting yourself, because this option is disabled by default on all iPhones. Here you will find the settings for the SOS emergency notification on your iPhone:
- Open ‘Settings’ on your iPhone;
- Scroll down and tap ‘SOS emergency notification’;
- Turn on “Call with five button presses.”
Have you enabled the feature? You don’t have to worry about accidentally contacting the emergency services. To make an SOS emergency call via the side button, you must press the button five times in quick succession. Then a countdown clock will be shown on the screen and an alarm will sound on the iPhone. Only after this countdown clock will an emergency message be sent to the emergency services and the selected emergency contacts.

More iPhone tips
There are several options for making an emergency call via your iPhone. You can also set that an SOS emergency notification is started when you press and hold the side button of the device. Be careful, because there is a greater chance that the countdown clock for the emergency notification will be started unintentionally. It is more common to accidentally hold down the side button for longer than to press this button five times in a row.
It is also wise to check who you have set as an SOS contact person, so that you can be sure that the right people receive a message in the event of an emergency call. In such a message you also send your location, so that emergency services and contacts can quickly arrive on site. This iPhone feature can save your life if necessary, so it’s important you have the right settings selected. Do you want to know more? Then sign up for our daily or weekly newsletter!
