Again many classics exempt from MOT

This is how many cars in the Netherlands turn 50 this year

All cars built in 1973 that turn 50 this year will receive a present, because they no longer have to be inspected – although it is of course allowed. The number of cars aged 50 and older was already 5,700 at the end of 2022. In 2023, 1,495 copies will be added. Most classics that have a 1973 license plate are a Citroën, but there is only one with a Volkswagen.

Two years ago, cars aged 50 and older were exempt from MOT. Such cars are less often on the road and the enthusiasts who cherish such classics put so much love into their hobby that the state of the technology is usually very good. This year, the number of over-50s on registration number will therefore increase by almost 1,500 cars. What is striking when we look at the list: there is still a lot of Citroën heritage that is coming to a respectable age. But many Volkswagens from the year 1973 are also still registered. Even fifty more than there are Mercedes cars from that year on the license plate. The Beetle is ineradicable, as we have already established. Of the then very popular Opel, there are 84 that no longer have to undergo an MOT from this year and that the brands Mercedes-Benz and Volvo are in third and fourth place respectively will not surprise anyone.
