This is how you convert Word documents to Google Docs

Converting Word documents to Google Docs files is not complicated, but you do need to know how it works. We explain it in this article. In addition, we’ll show you how to automatically convert multiple files to Docs at once. This is especially useful if you want to convert Word documents more often.

Word files Converting to Docs can be useful if, for example, you want to work on a document with several people at the same time. After all, you will immediately see adjustments that the other person makes when you open the Google Docs file. This is because the file is in the cloud.

Files to Google Drive

An essential step in converting Word files is therefore that you put them in Google Drive. You do this by open google drive and clicking New, at the top left of the screen. Choose Upload files and select the Word document you want to have in the cloud. You can also upload multiple files at once. After uploading a file in Drive, right-click on the document and choose Open with and then Google Docs. The Word document is then immediately converted into a Docs file.

Convert automatically

Converting documents one by one in the above manner can be quite time-consuming. Fortunately, there is also a way to automatically convert multiple documents at once. And not just Word files. In Google Drive, you can select an option to convert all uploaded files to Docs format. Become-, Exceland PowerPoint files are then directly converted to Docs, Sheets and Slides formats respectively. OpenOffice formats are also supported, Apple iWork files are not.

Open Google Drive again in your browser and click the gear icon to go to Settings to go. Put a check in Convert uploaded files to Google Docs editor format. Confirm your choice with FINISHED.

You can also have files converted automatically.

Files already in Drive won’t be converted automatically, so you’ll have to upload them again. So choose again New and upload any Word, Excel or PowerPoint files you want to convert. Google will then automatically convert the files to the correct Google Docs formats. There is nothing more to it. If you no longer want files to be converted automatically, you can always uncheck Convert uploaded files to Google Docs editor format in Google Drive settings.
