Your iPhone’s self-timer is built into the Camera app. You can choose from 3 seconds or 10 seconds and setting it up is very easy. Below we explain exactly how it works.

  1. Open the camera on your iPhone;

  2. Swipe up on the screen or tap the arrow at the top of the screen;

  3. In the bar that appears, tap the stopwatch icon;

  4. Tap your choice of 3 or 10 seconds and then the shutter button;

  5. Depending on your choice, the flash flashes for 3 or 10 seconds and then takes a photo. Towards the end it flashes faster.

How the photo is taken depends on your settings. You can set a filter in advance, or adjust the focus and exposure. Only videos and panoramic photos are not possible if you use the self-timer of your iPhone.

If you have enabled the Live Photos function, a Live Photo will also be taken. If you have disabled that function, ten photos are taken by default in Burst mode. Your iPhone then chooses the best of those ten photos. Such a series recording is saved as a jpg by default and not in the more efficient heic format.

To take really good photos with your iPhone’s self-timer, it’s important that you use a tripod. Your iPhone must be placed as straight as possible and this is often difficult or impossible to do without a tripod. It is important that your iPhone stands firmly, especially in poor lighting conditions.
