The AirPods light not only indicates the status of the earbuds. The color of the AirPods light says this even more!
This is what the color of the AirPods light says
You may have noticed: there is a very small light on (or in) the charging case of your AirPods. You may not often pay attention to it, but this light can tell you quite a bit about the (battery) status of your AirPods and the charging case.
When you have the AirPods in the charging case (and the cover is open), the light indicates the battery status of the AirPods. Even when your AirPods are not in the charging case, the color of the light gives you more information.
In that case, the light indicates the status of the case. Green means sufficiently charged and orange means less than one full charge remains on the battery. Below you will find an overview of each color of the AirPods light and what exactly that color means.
- White flashing light: your AirPods are in pairing mode. This happens when you click the button on the charging case and want to connect the earbuds to the iPhone;
- Orange light (with AirPods in the box): AirPods are charging;
- Orange light (without AirPods in the box): your charging case is not fully charged and has less than one full charge;
- Orange light (connected to power supply): AirPods are charging;
- Green light with AirPods in the box: the AirPods in the box are fully charged;
- Green light without AirPods in the box: the charging case is sufficiently charged;
- Green light (connected to power supply): the AirPods charging case is fully charged;
- Orange flashing light: that means the AirPods cannot connect. You must then reset the AirPods (you can read how to do that below);
- No light when you open the lid: the AirPods are empty and need to be charged.
Reset AirPods
Do your AirPods not want to connect? And do your AirPods show an orange flashing light all the time? Then you have to reset the AirPods once. You do this in the following way.
- Open the AirPods box and long press the button (the Configuration button) on the back of the box until the light starts flashing white;
- Hold the AirPods next to your iPhone, close the box and open the lid again;
- Follow the steps on the iPhone screen to reconnect your AirPods.
Doesn’t it work like that? Then you can try to remove the AirPods from your Bluetooth connections first. Tap ‘Settings > Bluetooth’. Then tap the information icon (the ‘i’ in a circle) next to the AirPods. Scroll down and choose ‘Forget this device’. Then try the above steps again.
Status light on the AirPods: you can find it here
The status light can be found in two places, depending on the AirPods you have. With the AirPods 1 and AirPods 2, the light is in the charging case. It then sits between the two earplugs.
Do you use the AirPods Pro 1, the AirPods Pro 2 or the AirPods 3? Or do you have a wireless charging case? Then you will find the light (and the corresponding color) on the outside of the AirPods charging case. The light is then just under the cover. On the AirPods Max, the status light is located next to the lightning port on the right earcup.
Buy AirPods
Don’t have AirPods yet? Or does the color of the light on the AirPods box always remain black? Then you have to go shopping and buy a new set of AirPods. You still have to decide which AirPods you want. Do you go for AirPods with noise canceling or without? The best AirPods without noise cancellation are the Apple AirPods 3.
