The display on the iPhone 16 Pro models isn’t just slightly larger, it also features another innovation. Here’s what you need to know.
This is new about the iPhone 16 Pro display
The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max feature larger displays than their predecessors. The iPhone 16 Pro has a 6.3-inch display (iPhone 15 Pro has 6.1 inches), and the iPhone 16 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display (iPhone 15 Pro Max has 6.7 inches).
According to Apple, the iPhone 16 Pro models have the thinnest bezels of any Apple product. Part of the increase in screen size is due to those thinner bezels, but the iPhone 16 Pro models are also slightly taller and ever so slightly wider than their predecessors.
- iPhone 16 Pro is 149.6 mm long, 71.5 mm wide, 8.25 mm thick and weighs 199 g.
- iPhone 15 Pro is 146.6 mm long, 70.6 mm wide, 8.25 mm thick and weighs 187 g.
- iPhone 16 Pro Max is 163 mm long, 77.6 mm wide, 8.25 mm thick and weighs 227 g.
- iPhone 15 Pro Max is 159.9 mm long, 76.7 mm wide, 8.25 mm thick and weighs 221 g.
While the size has increased, there are few other changes to the iPhone 16 display tech. Apple continues to use its Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion on the Pro models, and brightness and peak brightness are unchanged. All models have a maximum brightness of 1,000 nits, 1,600 nits peak brightness (HDR), and 2,000 nits peak brightness in direct sunlight.
- iPhone 16 Pro has a resolution of 2622 x 1206 pixels and 460 ppi.
- iPhone 15 Pro has a resolution of 2556 x 1179 pixels and 460 ppi.
- iPhone 16 Pro Max has a resolution of 2868 x 1220 pixels and 460 ppi.
- iPhone 15 Pro Max has a resolution of 2796 x 1290 pixels and 460 ppi.
Minimum brightness of 1 nit
What is new is a minimum brightness of 1 nit. This is something that Apple has also added to the Apple Watch Series 10. It would allow for a more frequently updated always-on display with a second hand. Some of that same advantage is now available on the iPhone Pro (Max). And it may be one of the reasons for the improved battery life.
The regular iPhone 16’s display also supports a minimum brightness of 1 nit. It just doesn’t have an always-on display and support for ProMotion. Both models do have a new second-generation Ceramic Shield coating, which Apple says is 50 percent stronger than the previous-generation Ceramic Shield coating used in the iPhone 15 models.
