European legislation
Apple has been equipping MacBooks with a MagSafe charging port for years, but the feature is unlikely to come to the iPhone 18 this year. European legislation requires Apple to provide mobile devices with a universal charging port. That is why the iPhone 15 and newer have a USB-C port, while previous iPhones had a Lightning port. The same USB-C port comes to the iPhone 18 series.
European legislation does not allow the USB-C port to be replaced by a MagSafe charging port. New devices must have a USB-C port, so that you only need one cable to charge all your devices. The iPhone 18 may be equipped with both charging ports, but it is unlikely that Apple will choose that. The magnetic charging port therefore remains exclusive to the MacBooks.
