This way WhatsApp protects your messages against Meta Ai

Meta AI comes to WhatsApp, which means that many users have worries about the privacy of their messages. This way WhatsApp protects your conversations.

Meta AI in WhatsApp

Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp have been expanded with Meta Ai, the new chatbot of the company. Meta AI is similar to chatgpt and gives an answer to all your questions with the help of artificial intelligence. For training Meta AI, (public) messages, photos and videos on Instagram and Facebook are used. Do you not want your messages to be used for training Meta AI? Then you can object to Instagram and Facebook until 27 May.

At WhatsApp it is not possible to object to Meta AI. It is not even possible to switch off the chatbot in the app, because Meta AI is automatically added to the messaging service. Soon the chatbot will be on your screen as soon as you open WhatsApp. How are your conversations and messages protected against Meta AI? WhatsApp has now given more clarity about this.

WhatsApp introduces private processing

WhatsApp has already indicated that Meta AI cannot read messages in your personal chats. Only messages that mention Meta AI (@metaai) or that you share directly with the chatbot are registered and read by Meta AI. Meta has taken various measures to guarantee the privacy of those messages. As many AI functions as possible are turned on your iPhone itself, so that no data is shared with Meta servers.

Meta AI can, for example, summarize messages, for which the chatbot registers the text in the message. Processing and summarizing this text is done on your iPhone, so that the personal message is not on Meta servers. Does Meta AI still need external servers to process the assignments? In that case all messages are encrypted end-to-end. That means that even Meta cannot read the messages, even if they are on the servers of the company. WhatsApp calls this ‘private processing’.

Similar to Apple Intelligence

An important advantage of private processing is that your messages are not stored on meta servers. All messages you share with Meta AI will be deleted after performing the assignment. That way your messages are always safe, even with a security breach in WhatsApp. The messages are not stored, so it cannot end up on the street later when Meta has to deal with technical problems.

It seems that Meta has copied for this at Apple, because the company has taken similar measures at Apple Intelligence. With Meta AI your messages are always encrypted end-to-end and they are not stored on Meta servers. In addition, WhatsApp has opened private processing to external researchers, so that the security and privacy of users can be checked by other companies.

WhatsApp will get Meta Ai soon

WhatsApp has therefore taken various measures to protect the privacy of users at Meta AI. It is striking that Meta is transparent about the behavior of private processing, because in this way external researchers get the chance to check the privacy and security of users. Meta usually shields these processes, so that they can only be checked internally.

Meta AI is gradually being rolled out at all users of WhatsApp around the world. You do not have to perform an update to add Meta AI to the messaging service, that happens automatically. The chatbot is not yet available in Dutch, but that will probably change soon. Do you want to know more about Meta AI? Then read all about the new position in WhatsApp here.
