Toyota has a good taste. It also brings the Corolla Cross presented last year to the Netherlands, adding Toyota a genuine Nissan Qashqai competitor to its Dutch delivery range. The always hybrid Toyota Corolla Cross will be available at dealers from the autumn of 2022.

Another new Toyota crossover or SUV? Of course. With the addition of the electric bZ4X, Toyota’s SUV range includes an extensive range and there is just one more: this Corolla Cross. How Toyota places that model? Right between the C-HR and the RAV4. Where the C-HR is a boldly contoured ‘low’ SUV-like with a steeply sloping roofline, the all-new Corolla Cross is a more conventionally contoured SUV with which Toyota is directing its arrows at cars like the Nissan Qashqai. To be fair: that the Corolla Cross would also come to Europe is of course no surprise to the fervent visitor of AutoWeek.nl.

Dimensions and platform
First the dimensions, because you may not see the forest for the trees. The Toyota Corolla Cross is 4.46 meters, 1.83 meters wide and 1.62 meters high. That makes the model about 10 centimeters longer, roughly 5 centimeters higher and a few centimeters wider than the C-HR. The RAV4 in turn is 11 centimeters longer than the Corolls Cross. What does Toyota’s new SUV destined for Europe and the Netherlands have in common with the C-HR presented in 2016? More than you think.
The Corolla Cross with which Toyota is also expanding its Corolla family in Europe is on exactly the same platform as the C-HR and the Corolla. It concerns the GA-C base, a platform that gives the car a wheelbase of 2.64 meters. Indeed, equal to the distance between the front and rear axles of the C-HR and of the hatchback version of the Corolla. Is all the technology of the Corolla Cross the same as that of its brothers and sisters? Well no.

Hybrid
Toyota is bringing a further developed version of the 2.0 Hybrid powertrain that we know from the C-HR and Corolla to the Corolla Cross. In the Toyota Corolla Cross, the hybrid hardware is good for 197 hp, while the 2.0 Hybrid in its two sister models produces 184 hp. Toyota reports that the battery is more powerful and 40 percent lighter, but the brand has not yet released what the capacity is. We do know that the Corolla Cross with this powertrain can reach 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds if you kick it on its tail.

Interior and safety
No new model is without the necessary displays and Toyota uses screens in the interior. The Corolla Cross gets a 12.3-inch large digital instrumentation and a 10.5-inch large screen that belongs to the infotainment system. That system can wirelessly handle Apple CarPlay and also knows what to do with Android Auto. Updating the system’s software is done over-the-air (OTA). So without the intervention of the Toyota dealer.
Toyota is supplementing the naturally well-known package of safety systems Toyota Safety Sense under the name T-Mate with things such as Pre-Collision Ssystem with Acceleration Suppression, Intersection Cut-in Traffic Assist and Intersection Turn Assist. Toyota Safety Sense brings, among other things, extensive traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, an active lane assistant, blind spot detection with Safety Exit Assist, automatic high beam, extensive parking aid and Rear Cross Traffic Alert to the Corolla Cross. As in the Yaris and Yaris Cross, there is also an airbag between the driver and front passenger. So safe in a side collision.
