Toyota presents an all-new Sequoia in the US. The Tundra’s SUV brother is the largest SUV in the brand’s range and can accommodate up to eight people.

Unlike the Tundra, which can also be seen in the Netherlands, we don’t actually know the Sequoia in our regions. That is logical, because for a large SUV there is simply no (gray license plate) tax advantage to be gained without major adjustments. However, the Sequoia is the SUV brother of the Tundra, which appeared in a completely new form in September. It is therefore logical that the Sequoia is now entering the next generation.

Like the Tundra, the Sequoia is built according to the body-on-frame principle, so with a separate ladder chassis. This makes it a direct competitor to cars such as the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition. The new Sequoia is very similar to the Tundra at the front, but of course has a roof that extends to the rear and a completely unique butt. It is very unfortunate – we think – that the electrically opening rear window has disappeared. With the previous Sequoia, that window disappeared with the push of a button in the tailgate. Handy for small items, but also just nice on sunny spring days. The new Sequoia has a fixed window and a regular one-piece peak.

However, the car offers as usual a huge box of space. Different seating arrangements are available, but the most practical variant can accommodate eight occupants. We know the dashboard from the Tundra and it combines a lot of luxury with a tough, unyielding appearance and a large screen.

All Sequoias are powered by the hybrid powertrain, which is the more powerful of the two options available in the Tundra. That means a 3.5-litre V6 and an electric motor, mated to – striking! – a ten-speed automatic. The mess helps 443 hp and 790 Nm on the leg, so no lack of power. This is also apparent from the towing weight, because this super SUV can move almost 4,100 kg in optimal shape. Four-wheel drive is of course available, but not standard. If you often go into the mud, it is best to opt for the sturdy TRD Pro version (here in white), which of course also underlines its all-rounder character with all kinds of appearances.

The new Toyota Sequoia will be available at the American dealer from the summer.
