Some people handle crises better than others and even grow when faced with challenges. New research shows that everyone can steel themselves to a certain extent against the adversities of life.

For a long time it seemed to be primarily a question of fate whether someone broke down from severely stressful life situations such as a serious illness or a failed marriage or whether they grew in the face of the challenge. Researchers simply assumed that one is resilient, i.e. has an inner protective shield against stress and crises, and the other is not. They considered resilience to be a relatively fixed personality trait.
