Treasure chest of nature

In this illustration from the Senckenberg Nature Museum Frankfurt, over 100 organisms from the kingdoms of fungi, lichens, bacteria, plants and animals are depicted – not in true proportions. They all contain natural substances that either produce pharmacologically active substances or with the help of which drugs are developed or tested. The pink spot symbolizes the loss of species and thus the lost potential of new active ingredients for research. The purple spot represents all previously unknown species: These could still be discovered and used in drug development.
