The national average liter price for gasoline has reached an all-time high in the United States. What the Americans have lost is still a pittance compared to what we pay here in the Netherlands.
The price for a gallon of gasoline on Tuesday averaged $ 4.17 in the US, the highest average price ever. The previous record dates back to 2008. That is what jalopnik based on figures from AAA, which calculates average fuel prices for the US. $4.17 per gallon is about $1.10 per liter. In euros we are talking about €1.01. The differences within the US are large. This is how you are in the so-called flyover states in the middle of the US up to $1.7 less per gallon than for example in California, the most expensive state. By the way, diesel is more expensive in the US than gasoline. A liter of diesel now costs an average of €1.16. That is not yet a record, by the way.
The fact that the price of petrol in the US has reached a new record is mainly due to the sharp rise in the oil price, partly due to the war in Ukraine. As much as 70 percent of the price of gasoline in the US is determined by the price of crude oil. A significant increase in that price therefore also has a direct effect on the prices at the pump. In the Netherlands it is different. Here, the price of crude oil determines only roughly a quarter of the price at the pump. The lion’s share consists of taxes. With rapidly rising oil prices, the price at the pump in our country therefore rises relatively less quickly than in the US. Not that we are any better off here: with an average national suggested retail price of €2.42 per liter of E10, we have already lost about two and a half times as much per liter as the Americans.
