Volkswagen: ‘German factories closed longer’

Volkswagen reports that it will in any case keep its German production locations closed for longer. All factories of the Volkswagen brand and those of Volkswagen Company Cars will remain closed for at least four days longer, together with various factories where parts are made.

At the beginning of last week, the Volkswagen Group announced that it would close all its European factories to prevent further spread of the coronavirus. About the Volkswagen brand factories located in Germany, the Volkswagen Group is now saying that the closure will be extended by four days until April 9. Also, the production sites of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Volkswagen Group Components, where it produces parts for Volkswag Group brands, will remain inactive until April 9.

According to Volkswagen, extending the period is partly due to a sharp fall in demand for new cars. Volkswagen also has to deal with problems that suppliers have to deal with. “The health of our employees is our top priority,” Andreas Tostmann, who oversees Volkswagen’s production chain, explains in a statement. “We will ensure that our employees can return to a safe working environment when production is restarted. We are taking into account the experiences we are currently gaining in China, where production has started again and the car market is recovering , “said Tostmann.
