Volkswagen Golf (1986) – In the Wild

Stayed so nice and normal

Volkswagen Golf (1986) – In the Wild

Some cars acquire a place in ‘In the Wild’ because they are special in themselves. That is not the case with this Volkswagen Golf. Yet this is also a very nice spot, which we would like to take a moment to look at.

In this section you will regularly find beautiful classics or remarkable more modern cars. This 1986 Volkswagen Golf is neither of these things, and yet it now fits on the In het Wild podium of honor. After all, just like its then strong competitor, the Opel Kadett E, it is a car that is inextricably linked to a certain period in the Dutch street scene and it is now becoming somewhat of a rarity. Nice to bump into one again, as happened recently to AutoWeek forum member HarmenA.

We are dealing here with a Golf II as you often saw it in its day. Nice and modest, or actually just downright ‘bald’. Steel wheels, a three-door and also in white. A 1.6 C, the cheapest version with that engine. In any case, you still had some power with the 1.6, there were smaller engines (1.3 and even a 1.05 for a short time). With its 75 hp, this Golf – provided all the horses are still present – still comes along quite well. In all respects, this is a Volkswagen that will initially be used purely as a no-nonsense means of transport. It was not uncommon for such a Golf to disappear to the scrap yard or abroad after about 10 or 15 years. Not this one; At the age of ten it went to the previous owner, who only parted with it after 27 years. This has brought the Golf to an ‘enthusiast age’.

Volkswagen Golf

At the beginning of this year, the Golf went to the current owner and there is a good chance that that is someone who gets a special feeling from this car. After all, it is no longer really a car that you simply buy because you need transportation. Then you can find much better for the money. Yet the Golf still seems to have an active existence, as evidenced by the dirt on the body. If we think about that for a moment, we are left with a nice car for its age, still ready for more. Nice is not it?
