Volkswagen settles in German cheat software case

Volkswagen has reached a settlement with 200,000 of the 260,000 drivers who jointly filed a lawsuit against the company over the cheating software that led to the diesel scandal in 2015. That makes Volkswagen known today.

The German brand will pay between € 1,350 and € 6,250 per vehicle. In addition, a further 21,000 prosecutors may be eligible for the same payment. In total, the German settlement Volkswagen costs € 620 million. The brand had set aside € 830 million.

The diesel scandal has cost Volkswagen about € 28 billion in recent years. The largest amount was lost by the brand on the settlement of about € 23 billion that it hit with American customers. In addition, Volkswagen incurred costs with recalls and adjustments to the offending models.

Five years ago, it became apparent that Volkswagen diesel cars performed better during emission tests due to the use of special software and were cleaner than they actually were.
