The new Volkswagen Tiguan will no longer have a longer Tiguan Allspace variant next to it. Yet a longer alternative to the Tiguan is coming to the Netherlands. We are not talking about the Touareg, but about the Volkswagen Tayron. Does that name sound familiar to you? That may very well be true.

In September last year, the world was introduced to the new Volkswagen Tiguan. The third generation Tiguan – which we have already driven for the first few meters – is always a five-seater. Unlike its predecessor. A year after its introduction, Volkswagen also launched an extended version of the previous generation Tiguan: the Tigaun Allspace. That Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace was 11 centimeters longer than the ‘short’ version and was even almost 22 centimeters longer in total. The longer Tiguan was optionally available with a third row of seats that transformed the SUV into a seven-seater. There will be no Allspace variant of the new Volkswagen Tiguan, but a longer alternative will take its place. On these spy plates we see that extra practical Tiguan for the first time.

The car that will take the place of the previous Tiguan Allspace will soon be known as Tayron in Europe. You may know that model name. In 2018, one of Volkswagen’s Chinese joint ventures – FAW Volkswagen – launched an SUV with that name. Two years after its Chinese market introduction, that Tayron was even replaced by a variant with a more sloping roofline: the Tayron The second generation Tayron is also coming to Europe, Volkswagen told the English Autocar last year. It is the second generation Volkswagen Tayron that will take on the role of the Tiguan Allspace in Europe.

Does that mean that Volkswagen will bring the SUV straight from China to Europe? No. FAW-Volkswagen will build its version for the Chinese market, the variant intended for Europe will roll off the production line in Wolfsburg. Just like the new Tiguan, the Tayron will also be based on a further development of the MQB platform and will also be supplied with at least two plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Now that we can combine China and Tiguan: the Tiguan also exists in China. For example, Volkswagen in China currently still supplies the previous generation Tiguan, the Tiguan Allspace as the Tiguan L and even a ‘coupé version’ of that model in the form of the Tiguan X.
