Apple has released watchOS 10.1. In this article you can read what’s new and which Apple Watch models are supported.
watchOS 10.1: Double tap finally available
One of the highlights of watchOS 10.1 is the Double Tap feature. This feature was already announced during the Apple event last September and is now finally available to everyone. You do need an Apple Watch Series 9 or an Apple Watch Ultra 2, because the latest S9 chip is required.
You use double tap by tapping your finger and thumb together. You can operate your Apple Watch with watchOS 10.1 without touching the screen. This is possible thanks to the Neural Engine on the S9 chip, the motion sensor, gyroscope and heart rate sensor. Tapping causes the blood to flow through your veins differently, which is detected by the heart rate sensor and interpreted as two taps.
watchOS 10.1: Use NameDrop with your Apple Watch
Another new feature that watchOS 10.1 brings is NameDrop. You probably already know this feature from iOS 17 and it is intended to make it easy to share contact information. It works by holding two iPhones together. But once you install the new operating system, it will work with your Apple Watch too!
Furthermore, as always, the update brings a number of bug fixes. This ensures that your Apple Watch will work a little smoother again. Possible security risks are also eliminated with the update. Reason enough to start installing watchOS 10.1 immediately.
This is how you download the new version of watchOS
To install the new version of watchOS, you need an iPhone XS or newer with iOS 17.1 installed. The Apple Watch models that support watchOS 10 also support watchOS 10.1.
So you must first install iOS 17.1. That update was released at the same time as the new watchOS. Once you have done this, go to ‘Settings > General > Software Update’ on your Apple Watch to install the update.
