With watchOS 9, your Apple Watch has received quite a few new features. We’ll show you four features you don’t know yet!

watchOS 9: 4 new features you don’t know yet

Apple’s smartwatch (Apple Watch Series 4 and above) has recently received a new version of watchOS. watchOS 9 has some cool new features, but some of them are quite hidden. We have listed four of these functions for you!

1. View heart rate zones on Apple Watch

Many runners use heart rate zones to get more out of their training. This way you can immediately see whether your heart rate is in the right range, for example to burn fat or train your muscles.

When you track the data while running (or other fitness training), you can now view more information. By swiping up the screen with the stopwatch and kcal, you will see different heart rate zones on your Apple Watch. The Apple Watch also immediately indicates the current heart rate zone. This makes it easier to stay in the desired heart rate zone during your training.

2. Add Calendar Events with Apple Watch

Even before watchOS 9, you could only view the calendar on the Apple Watch and it was not possible to add a new appointment. With the new features in watchOS 9, you can now.

  • Open the Calendar app on your Apple Watch;
  • Tap the button with the three dots;
  • Choose ‘New activity’;
  • Type a ‘Title’ and ‘Location’ and enter the date, time and invitees;
  • Then tap ‘Add’.

3. Find your way back with ‘Backtrack’ and the compass app

You don’t necessarily need an Apple Watch Ultra to use the new features of the Compass app. Any Apple Watch Series 6 or later with watchOS 9 can use the following cool feature.

With the compass app you can now record the route you walk. Are you lost afterwards? Then use the ‘Backtrack’ function to find your way back. You start recording the route by tapping the two footprints in the compass app.

To find the route again, tap the pause icon and choose ‘Find your way back’. Then use the moving arrow to find your route. Are you back on the familiar road? Then tap the two footprints again and choose ‘Delete steps’.

4. Apple Watch mirroring (Apple Watch synchronous display)

Is your Apple Watch screen cracked or unreadable? Or do you sometimes have trouble reading the text with certain Apple Watch apps? Then watchOS 9 has the solution for you. You can show the screen of your Apple Watch on your iPhone. You do that with the synchronous Apple Watch display function.

  • Open the ‘Settings’ on your iPhone;
  • Scroll down and choose ‘Accessibility’;
  • Tap “Apple Watch Sync Display”;
  • Turn on the slider at ‘Synchronous Apple Watch display’.

Your Apple Watch screen will now appear on your iPhone. You can use it to launch all apps on your Apple Watch. Even the Digital Crown works as expected. We don’t want to withhold a nice tip from you: start the camera app on your iPhone via the Apple Watch and film the screen of your Apple Watch for a funny Droste effect.
