We have to miss this function with the AirTag 2 (and that’s a shame)

The AirTag 2 will be released in 2025, but according to rumors, the tracker is missing a much-requested function. This is what this feature is all about!

Air Tag 2

Apple introduced the AirTag in 2021 and the company has since expanded the tracker with many useful features. The first AirTag is still Apple’s latest (and only) version, but that will change next year. It is expected that Apple will then release the AirTag 2, which will have a new chip and improved privacy.

It is almost certain that the AirTag 2 has a much greater range than the current generation. This means you can see the precise location of the AirTag from a greater distance. Apple is also making improvements to the privacy of the AirTag, so that the tracker is less likely to be misused for stalking purposes, for example. Unfortunately, we have to make do without a much-requested feature with the AirTag 2.

Battery returns to the AirTag

The current version of the AirTag works with a button cell battery. This battery lasts about a year, but must then be replaced. That is one of the disadvantages of the AirTag, which we will unfortunately also see in the next generation. According to rumors, the AirTag 2 cannot be charged, instead the tracker works with the same button cell battery.

This means that you will also have to replace the battery with the next AirTag once in a while. It is quite possible that the battery of the AirTag 2 will last longer due to the new processor in the device. This is probably more energy efficient, meaning the battery will need to be replaced less quickly. Apple will probably not make any changes to the design of the AirTag, so we will also see the current design on the AirTag 2.

Release of the AirTag 2

The AirTag 2 does not get a new battery or updated design, but it does have other improvements under the hood. The device will have an improved U2 chip (ultra-wideband), which we previously saw in the iPhone 15. With this processor you can see the location of the AirTag even more accurately and from a much greater distance. For example, the next generation of the AirTag is easier to find via the Find My app.

It is still unclear which functions should improve the privacy of the AirTag 2. Apple may be working on improved built-in speakers that cannot be turned off. This way, AirTags can always play a sound, so you can track them down if an unknown AirTag moves with you. Apple will probably launch the AirTag 2 on the market in mid-2025.
